Fall jackets for women are one of my favorite parts of getting dressed this time of year. After months of lightweight dresses, sandals, and trying to wear as little as humanly possible in the heat, I’m always ready for layers, beautiful fabrics, and a little more structure.
For me, the easiest way to change an entire outfit is with a jacket. It is the one layer you wear that everyone sees, so I like it to be something timeless and classic that I can wear every day, but that also travels easily.
This season, I’ve been looking closely at fall jackets that feel timeless enough to wear for years but still make an outfit feel current. I’m not interested in buying an entirely new wardrobe every September. I would much rather find a handful of pieces that work with what I already own and make getting dressed easier.

My fall wardrobe tends to stay fairly consistent: great denim, trousers, simple knits, white and black tees, loafers, ballet flats and a few really good layers. The jackets are what give those basics personality.

1. The Classic Trench Coat
If there is one piece of outerwear I associate most with fall jackets for women, it’s the classic trench coat. I have several at different price points, with my Burberry Kensington being my absolute favorite. That said, I get that this option is quite an investment piece and not in everyone’s budget.
I first tried this trench coat last year in navy. The structure and hand feel were so close to the Burberry trench that I own in black that I came back this year to purchase the light tan option. During those transitional weeks, I usually prefer lightweight jackets and layers rather than committing to something heavy first thing in the morning.
The trench also works beautifully for travel because it creates a finished outfit while still being practical. I can wear it over denim and sneakers during the day, then change into trousers and loafers at night without changing the coat.

There are certain pieces I will defend forever, and a camel coat is one of them. I don’t need a new interpretation every year. I don’t need bells and whistles. Give me beautiful proportions, a gorgeous camel color, and high-quality materials, and I’m done.
A wool-and-cashmere coat is obviously the warmest option in this group, so this is the one I’m reaching for once we move beyond early fall weather and into genuinely cold days.
What I love most about camel is how it elevates everything underneath it. A black sweater and jeans suddenly look better. Cream trousers look incredibly chic. Navy works beautifully with it. Even sneakers feel more intentional under a great camel coat.
This is also where I’m willing to spend more if the quality warrants it. I’m never interested in buying something simply because it is expensive, but outerwear is one area where fabric and construction really do make a difference. And honestly, the quality on this coat for the price point is really good.
If I am heading somewhere with genuinely chilly weather, I would rather have one beautiful coat that works over everything than pack several mediocre ones. That is the point of a thoughtful wardrobe in the first place. And when I think about fall jackets for women, a camel coat is always in my top five.
4. The Navy Captain’s Blazer
There will always be a navy blazer somewhere in my closet. In fact, I have more than I probably should because it is something I wear close to weekly. I have different fabrics, weights, and styles, so I can easily reach for one throughout the year.

That kind of versatility matters enormously to me when I travel.
There are plenty of women’s fall jackets that look fabulous hanging by themselves but become strangely difficult once you actually try to build outfits around them. I want the opposite. The jacket needs to work with my wardrobe essentials—not require me to create an entirely new wardrobe around the jacket.
A navy blazer also gives you a polished look without feeling as severe as a black blazer sometimes can. I love black, obviously, but navy with gold hardware has a slightly softer feel that works beautifully with denim, camel, cream, chocolate brown and gray.
Why I’m loving it
It instantly makes simple pieces feel more intentional, and that is essentially my entire philosophy when packing. I don’t want to pack complicated outfits. I want great basics and one layer that makes them look better. And this is one of those fall jackets that just does that.
5. The Plaid Blazer – Quintessentially Fall
The last jacket in my top five fall jackets for women adds the most visual interest to the group.
I normally keep prints fairly restrained, but plaid in fall is an exception. It feels seasonal without feeling gimmicky, particularly when the colors are grounded in neutrals. Sometimes that is exactly what a small travel wardrobe needs. I’m careful about prints when I pack because they can limit the number of combinations you can create. But a neutral plaid behaves almost like another solid. It still works with the same black, cream, camel and denim pieces I would be bringing anyway.

How I Think About Fall Outerwear
When I’m choosing fall jackets, I generally ask myself three things:
- Will I wear it with at least several outfits I already own?
- Can I dress it up and down?
- And would I actually want to travel with it?

For me, the winners are almost always classic shapes, neutral colors, good texture and pieces that can move comfortably between travel, weekends and everyday life. That isn’t about building the smallest possible wardrobe.
It’s about building a useful one.
